technology such as glass processing is an integral part of Tampere s current and future economy The proposed glass pavilion is a building with materials and composition reflective of its modern time The proposed glass pavilion is harmonious with the Tampere climate In cold winter months the pavilion will be warmed by radiant heating below the ground plane It will harness the heat recovery from the parking structure via a radiant metal enclosure below and within the glass shell Additionally the warmed glass shell will provide natural snow melting 657123 Mr Werner Sobek Werner Sobek Stuttgart GmbH Co KG The proposed pavilion covers a major part of Suomen Pankki Plaza with a light and airy canopy The gentle curve of the roof that sweeps over the plaza allows functions to merge in an out of the space underneath the canopy Its clear straight edge along Hatanpään Valtatie emphasizes the border that is being drawn here in order to enhance the qualities of the plaza by diminishing the disturbance form the street s emissions The glass roof is mostly transparent Subtle printed patterns of different densities and varying degrees of light transmission enhance its luminous character define the plane of the roof against its surroundings and provide shading in the summer During wintertime a special heatable coating prevents snow from piling up on the roof and blocking the daylight The roof creates a pleasant and sheltered space for lingering throughout all seasons The elegantly weaving glass wall along Hatanpään Valtatie protects the Plaza from the noise and other emissions of the street A pattern of floral petals is printed onto the glass wall The secondary elements of the plaza such as the stairway and elevators to the underground parking garage the shelters at the bus stops or the bar and café underneath the roof are cladded in colored glass panes that will be subtlety illuminated at nighttime These elements become part of the lighting concept and act as lanterns on the plaza at night and wintertime Magnolia winning proposal ALA Architects The architects propose to plant a Magnolia tree for Tampere An intelligent glass dome will provide the tree with a more southern climate complete with ventilation shading and lighting The air exhaust of the parking garage will provide additional heating during the cold dark months This dome will have its own microclimate fine tuned using the technical abilities provided by its glazed surface Architecturally the project uses the most obvious simple qualities that glass has Transparency is used to provide the Magnolia tree with sunlight reflections dissolve the dome into surrounding foliage and refractions magnify the blossoms of the Magnolia onto the full undulating dome These spherically extruded surfaces create a variety of illusions The pavilion houses an information kiosk and a large LED screen on the concrete wall of the staircase structure displaying necessary information The glass is melted into shape by gravitation The flat panel is placed on a simple triangular frame and melted into its distinctive spherical
