  • Review: Yahoo! Buys Summly, But Was It Any Good? | Kanguro Communications
I was quick to download the app when it become available and was instantly drawn by the appeal of consuming content faster If you follow me on Twitter and Google you ve noticed I do a lot content curation I spend about an hour or so going through RSS feeds picking the best articles to share with my audience So if there was something that could make the process more productive it was well worth taking a closer look The Good Attractive design simple yet elegant Summly did a good and accurate job in summarization long articles Saved me time consuming content and was great for waiting in lines Social sharing on Summly was intuitive hold down on the screen and the sharing options appear The Bad Long list posts didn t do well with Summly s algorithm I had to open up the full article in order to get all the information While innovative getting used to the finger gestures was difficult I never got quite used to it and always found myself going back to the main screen by accident I got annoyed when the news feed would show multiple articles from the same publisher Especially when it was a publisher I had no interest in Social sharing was limited to only Twitter and Facebook Links would sometimes be broken Verdict Summly was fun to use in the beginning Sadly the novelty wore off after 2 months of use To me it became a news app where i d only find one or two useful articles And didn t offer much in new content discovery as Zite does I like products that try something different and Summly does that with its summarization algorithm and finger gestures Although innovative the iOS app was still a work in progress and

anything other than my smartphone Here s a brief rundown on the app and my take on Poster Poster for iPhone Review First Impressions After reading what various blogger had to say about Poster and looking at the screenshots it felt like a well designed app It s sleek keeps it simple and remains functional No need to look up for help here the interface just makes sense Having used it to publish this post I got to say that I like it and feels much better than the official WordPress iOS app Noteworthy Features Image uploading works fine and you can specify titles and alt tags for your pictures too ideal for SEO Poster also supports Dropbox integration allowing you to sync your text files and open them in the app There s also markdown support which is great for putting in your headers with ease You can write your posts within the app using markdown as it provides you with the formatting options above the keyboard Poster also lets you customise the URL add categories assign tags to your posts and schedule your publishing Giving you the essentials of WordPress while you re mobile Final Thoughts So did I enjoy writing my first blog post on my iPhone Not so much But Poster made it a pleasant experience And shows that you can publish posts with just a smartphone However this is a short post and I did write it in the comfort of my own home I can only assume that the iPad version would be much more productive in typing out longer posts At least editing would be easier on a larger screen and you ll have less typos too Nevertheless Poster is well worth the money And makes posting from my iPhone easy However it

  • Smartphone Review: Nokia Lumia 800 | Kanguro Communications
Windows you got to applaud them for releasing something completely different from that of Android and iOS On the surface iOS and Android are quite similar in design with Android giving more in terms of customization Sliding through screens is natural gesture for holding a phone and there s no need reposition your hand if you re just browsing through status updates The tiles on the home screen are big because its meant to stop you from accidently mispressing on applications The Bad Things Buttons Compared to the price of an iPhone this phone is cheap for a high end smartphone Despite the positives after forking out 400 you d expect the build quality to do the design justice Sadly that s not the case Fresh from the shop and opened from its packaging the camera button on the Lumia 800 was loose and slightly out of place Not a deal breaker though but certainly something you wouldn t expect from Nokia and their flagship device at the time If you happen to among the unlucky to have this problem and take photos regularly you ll find this to be particularly annoying when trying to auto focus Apps Don t dismiss Windows Phone just yet because of a lack of applications It s early days for them and Microsoft seems to pulling out all the guns to promote greater developer participation Even so as to reaching to startups and setting up an App Campus at Aalto University Yet after you download all the essentials such as Evernote Flickr Twitter LinkedIn TuneIn Radio You re left with a somber feeling of emptiness Browsing through the Marketplace you will find some gems like Skyscanner and games like Breakout But otherwise you re still limited to what you can do with your Lumia 800 Camera The camera is a bit shoddy If you re looking for an excellent camera you d be better off going for an iPhone or the new Nokia PureView 808 41 megapixels Nonetheless the camera does its job quite nicely when you want to capture special moments Although you ll see some decrease in picture quality with little light the camera works very well on a sunny day But regardless of the shortcomings of the camera Nokia appears to provide a solution for those not so good pics with their Creative Studio app A Photoshopish app that allows you to edit your photos Skype Okay so long story short Microsoft buys Skype They release a beta version and then officially release it on the Marketplace Sounds great doesn t it That is until you find out that it doesn t run in the background Meaning you won t be able to receive messages or calls when you re not on the app itself and your phone is locked This is similar to what Skype was like on iOS 3 back in 2009 It s not all bad though considering the speed to which they ve released it and that
