and Russia and involve a day of coaching and of the pitch From the teams pitching in the event one is chosen to be invited to the Startup Sauna seed accelerator program in Helsinki This time it would be Lokus Digital The day of the Warmup began with keynotes even though there was some trouble with the coaches reaching Turku Well flat tires won t keep startup minded people waiting we get things done one way or the other The coaches for the day were Paolo Borello Sakari Pihlava Mike Bradshaw Perttu Mäki Petäjä Ville Simola and Antti Ylimutka from the Sauna team also gave feedback After the keynotes we were given some time to get our slides ready for the pitch As usual there was something wrong This time it was the fonts but I had chosen the defaults so that it looked ok nevertheless Anyway it took some effort to make the slides at all since my laptop gave up the day before and I had spent the last day in Tampere meeting Koopee Hiltunen from Neogames and attending the IGDA meeting Borrowing a laptop from a friend in the middle of the night got me through the mess The pitch in the warmup was three minutes There were a few questions but most of the coach feedback and questions would come in the afternoon coaching sessions Everything went smoothly in the pitch and during the coaching sessions I started to feel that we have a good chance of winning the event To be totally honest that was not the feeling in the morning after too few hours of sleep In the coaching sessions it was especially nice to meet again with some of the coaches we had met earlier in the summer It was evident that we

  • Academia vs Entrepreneurship | Lokus Digital
so important to business we have an important difference with academia A scientist has no customer Some economist may claim that the university mankind or the corporate world are customers in need of knowledge This is not true It is just a way to use familiar terms to describe something unknown On the other hand I might use physics terms to rationalize business Sometimes it s hopeless as I am applying it to something irrational actually it happens quite often A customer is someone whose opinion shape the product A product is useless if it doesn t fill the needs or at least a need of a customer Scientists produce information which should be as objective as possible regardless who is going to see it Of course people are subjective and totally objective science is difficult with the exception of pure mathematics Of course there are many smaller differences and quite a few things that at first seemed important but don t really turn out to be differences But let s move on to the similarities Even though science is not about money it is still important Be it salary or stipendium you need some money So much time is wasted in applying for money On the startup side you usually start with very little actual money And again you need it So you waste a lot of time trying to convince investors or applying for grants Both in academia and startups you really need the passion for what you are doing because at some point you need to burn the candle from both ends and the middle to get it working On the upside you can largely decide the working times yourself Just the results matter As an employee in a corporation it is different as you tend to

usually end up asking myself why would I play this on a phone There is also the minor problem of battery life There are some nice games which use the phone features innovatively Games like Parallel Kingdoms SpecTracker and Zombie Run give hope for the future but really miss much or their potential These are location based games which create an augmented or alternate reality Unfortunately that game side is

  • What is wrong with mobile games? Part I | Lokus Digital
had not happened before Basically the same thing has happened with every media like movies With hardware you get a free ticket for innovation You can do stuff unseen before To me the frontiers of today are mobile games and social games Both have been around for quite a few years but are clearly still ongoing strong change Be it the business models game mechanics or graphics there are strong forces of change in work One of the reasons for this is that money involved in the industry has grown rapidly We all know of the unbelievably high valuations for say Zynga These are good things really What is not good is that these tend to drive the scene to a future with very few options I concentrate here on mobile games because that is what we are about Okay it s easy to make mobile games There are tons of games that have required just a few days of development Some of them even rank high on the markets Of course time spent in the development is by no means a merit in itself The faster and cheaper the game comes out the better The bad thing is that this drowns the market in crap This makes it more difficult and more expensive for good games to stand out Many of these two day projects are casual fun for one minute games Most people play mobile games for just a few minutes at a time but the problem is you don t want to return to these games Ever There is really no challenge no innovation The graphics are cute though Mobiles devices are all about communication So why are so few games taking advantage of the social aspect When they do we get mostly copies of Facebook games

all of them otherwise we wouldn t probably be sitting here together We could easily group most of the values in groups and try to make collective names for them Fun and Imagination could clearly be picked for the values of the company Everything was more difficult to write into something that could sell Especially the morals side was difficult Would our games concentrate on making people more just In the end we managed to salvage some morality Here is what values we ended up with Fun Life is too short not to have fun and we believe that everyone should have fun That is why we make games cause games are all about fun Community We believe that a community of people is greater than its constituent parts We provide new worlds for people to share and enjoy with their friends acquaintances and strangers Imagination Imagination is one of the greatest gifts people have We encourage people to use it we do so too No half measures Our ambition does not allow us half hearted actions We drive our business aggressively forward and accept no compromises Reach for the stars Be it in the metaphorical or physical sense we
