  • New openings in the cooperation between the police and social work in immigrant work
on call basis because experiences from this kind of cooperation have been very positive When integration is seen as a two way process cooperation between the immigrants police and social workers is important For example in Finland there are only a few police officers and social workers from immigrant background They would have valuable cultural knowledge that could benefit the integration work In the immigrant communities there are contact persons who act as so called cultural interpreters They have an important role in building trust between the authorities and the immigrants Individuals can also have very different experiences of e g the police in their country of origin and this can have an effect on what they think about the police in their new country of residence Apart from the authorities the third sector is an invaluable actor in immigrant integration Cooperation between the different partners runs quite smoothly in many cases but there are still things that need to be developed The third sector organisations say that the authorities could cooperate with them more on a case by case basis and make more use of the know how the organisations have The international project Immigrants Police and Social Work IPS has identified good and promising practices of how the integration of immigrants is successfully supported in the different parts of Europe For example the successful practices have related to a certain point in the immigrant s life multi professional work processes or wider development work that has started from local experiments Apart from Finland the IPS project has reported good practices from Sweden Spain the Netherlands and the UK Good practices have been created e g in the cooperation of authorities working in suburbs immigrant counselling and service provision the support of immigrant minors who have immigrated without their parents helping immigrant women who have encountered domestic violence the mentoring activities of the police child welfare work and supporting of the social inclusion of young immigrants The good practices collected in the IPS project may act according to the diffusion process of innovations i e it is possible to apply them to new situations and contexts in different countries and their regions The society should support active citizenship and integration as a two way process in which the immigrants are not only objects of the different actions they should be regarded as crucial actors and social developers A link to the study http www migrationinstitute fi pdf IPS C18 pdf Project Planner Sari Vanhanen The Family Federation of Finland Research director Elli Heikkilä Institute of Migration Finland Back to blog entries Blog The Metropolis2013 blog will publish postings on the organising of the conference fair trade sustainable development and the conference city Tampere There will also be writings on different themes in migration studies written by researchers Blog Migration and crisis what the experience of Ukraine reveals On May 28th the Min Organisations will be awarded for their good work with young immigrants The Advisory Board f Is 60

  • Tampere – Big City of Smooth Living, Responsibly Leading Development
criteria Tampere emphasises the inhabitants opportunities for participation as a part of the sustainable development work the City undertakes The inhabitants can give their views in the Valma preparation forum on the issues that have been posted there for comments They can also take part in the inhabitants hearings organised by the City Council and the Mayor and in the Alvari workshops that are organised in the different residential areas Thus the inhabitants are heard and they can influence decision making already at the preparatory stages The inhabitants sustainable life styles are supported with the help of environmental awareness training and different campaigns and events One example of this was the Ilmankos climate project the aim of which was to promote the inhabitants feelings of community and participation and to encourage them to make climate friendly choices The City of Tampere also wants to bear global responsibility and to have a positive effect on the lives of people living in developing countries for example Apart from the active climate work one indication of this is the Fairtrade Town status Tampere was afforded in 2008 In order to get this status the City is committed to serving fair trade coffee and tea in all its own events and to promote the fair trade ideology and use of fair trade products in its area Tampere has also had long term cooperation with its Tanzanian twin town Mwanza The aim of the cooperation is to promote sustainable development the inhabitants participation in the city administration good administration cultural exchange and the capacity building and technological know how of city employees The promotion of sustainable development and environmental issues is everybody s business and the work must be done in a wide network of cooperation so that the commitments and goals can bear actual fruit One such showcase is the Metropolis 2013 conference in which the City of Tampere as the responsible organiser has wanted to show an example by putting the event together according to sustainable development principles The conference organisers have issued a statement about this The organisers of the 2013 International Metropolis Conference are committed to design organise and implement the conference in a way that minimises negative environmental impacts and leaves a positive legacy for the host community The organisation of the conference will thus be evaluated at all stages from the point of view of sustainable development Sustainable choices will be made as regards the conference materials transportation lodging and catering The conference venue the Tampere Hall is also a front runner of organising sustainable events All these concrete steps will be described on the conference home page as we are getting nearer the conference ILMANKOS project http www ilmankos fi en Tampere Mwanza Local Governance Cooperation project http www tampere fi english tampereinfo projects mwanza html Sanna Mari Huikuri Sustainable Development Specialist City of Tampere Back to blog entries Blog The Metropolis2013 blog will publish postings on the organising of the conference fair trade sustainable development and the

  • Migration, is that an ever unclear concept?
least this time was that there was actually a set of indicators that were commonly used to collect data which then enabled comparisons between the different countries At the conference I was a bit confused again with the concepts When we discuss migration and migrants we automatically think about cross border migration not moving within one nation In southern Africa it did not matter at all whether you moved from the countryside to urban areas or from one country to another The mechanisms are the same In fact or so I understood there are more migrants in the inland China than in the cross border migration in the whole world Both in China and e g Egypt one can face racial discrimination between the Egyptians or Chinese who come from different parts of the country One small but very meaningful detail that I thought to be very wise and future oriented was the case of Swaziland All the school children get a meal during the school day School lunches are also done in Finland and they have been a meaningful nutritional factor in getting the high results in the OECD PISA student assessments Good for you Swaziland If anyone is interested in research on the food security in the urban areas of Africa please check out this website http afsun org I was told that eventually also the conference speakers PowerPoint slides will appear on this site Marja Nyrhinen Head Coordinator of Migration Issues Secretary General of the Organising Team Back to blog entries Blog The Metropolis2013 blog will publish postings on the organising of the conference fair trade sustainable development and the conference city Tampere There will also be writings on different themes in migration studies written by researchers Blog Migration and crisis what the experience of Ukraine reveals

  • Why do we defend free education?
can make it more difficult for students coming from low income backgrounds to get the education they want It is hardly necessary to say that what we in the Western world think of as small tuition fees can be an extremely large investment to students who come from the poorest countries Tuition fees endanger genuine internationalisation when education is marketed only to those who have shown interest in education that comes with a fee and who are ready to pay the price This kind of thinking is against all the aims and strategies that are drafted to justify internationalisation Finland has a high standard of living but our costs of living are also high If education comes with a fee it is possible that the international experts who have graduated here will want to go to countries which offer better value for their salaries We need both international experts and tax payers if we want to maintain our current level of social services So tuition fees are an obstacle to internationalisation which is of utmost importance to the development of both the society and science As students throughout the world the Finnish student movement has also strongly profiled itself as a defender of free education The student movement has historically been a frontrunner in the society and we have promoted our own but also the society s interests in cooperation It is only through cooperation that we are able to defend tuition free education and in so doing promote global equality Niina Jurva Member of the Board of the Student Union of University of Tampere 2012 Member of the Board of the National Union of University Students in Finland 2013 Back to blog entries Blog The Metropolis2013 blog will publish postings on the organising of the conference fair trade sustainable
