  • Into the World of Hackathons: Raimo on SupperHappyDevHouse | Startup Life
people feel productive in comparison to staying alone at their homes That certainly does improve the productivity of all people if you count the number of distractions during the day but hopefully everyone is able to enjoy the atmosphere nevertheless Our group had all kind of various targets for the afternoon and evening Some people wanted to just see or learn something new and some people had their own projects which to continue developing Me and Ilkka decided to have a look at a multiplayer car driving game I had created on HTML5 Canvas during 2011 Ilkka started to make some graphics to it and I decided to rewrite the server side in NodeJS originally Ruby and EventMachine Here is a picture of a phase in the design process The hackathon space had all kind of other equipment for releasing the stress and help refocusing on the work There was a dancing game two large screens with FPS games snacks drinks and huge pile of legos for releasing the stress The social aspect of the event was quite ok even though we mainly concentrated on our projects and didn t ask people what they were working on probably the best

  • Raimo, feeling the serendipitous environment of Silicon Valley | Startup Life
Finnish apartment Additionally I found the nearest gym and a beach where I actually went swimming on Sunday morning I also planned to start jogging around the beach area which looks like this On Saturday I decided to join Zendesk Mafia s ramen excursion Ramen was really good food so we ended up eating it both for the brunch and dinner The place were we originally headed to was opened so late that we had to find something to do at 2PM and therefore had some food before going to the actual ramen place called Santa Ramen In the evening everyone felt extremely full Here is a photo of the actual food On Sunday for the first ever everybody from the second Startuplife batch were present in a brunch at San Francisco Ottos chose us quite a popular brunch place Stacks We discussed about everybody s day to day life and so on After the brunch we visited Alamo Square and hang outside as the weather was quite nice After sunset we gathered together to watch the Super Bowl Not quite surprisingly the bar where we were was completely empty as San Francisco 49ers didn t make it to the final Here s a picture of us in Alamo Square During the next few days I started writing a blog post at work and looking for some more meetups to visit I found the on Wednesday It was a meetup about using JavaScript and HTML5 technologies for Game Development As I had been developing a small cargame with JavaScript and HTML5 I was definitely interested to visit there I would say it was the best meetup so far because of two reasons People were interested on the subject and the event was generally well organized even though there was no beer Both of the speakers were able to make audience active and state their opinions aloud which is always a good sign I m about to make the same thing happen as the group organizer asked to give a presentation on my cargame in a few months The first speech in 5 GamesJS Meetup was about TV as a development platform According to Allen Ellison the same kind of challenges than in mobile development apply to TV also Small amount of memory limited computing power and unrealistic emulators of the actual hardware are the things which have to be addressed Henri Binsztok in the picture below talked about the Opa language and how well it works for game development It basically provides a compact language which is used to define both the server and client side of a web application The server side uses ocaml to create native server applications and client side is compiled into JavaScript Sounded quite cool as I mentioned in my tweet which was a response to a comment of my original tweet about my first UserVoice Developer Blog post Hooray On Thursday February 9th was my birthday So I decided to take people to The

  • Pekka in San Francisco: I’m starving among these tea-drinking non-eating hippies! | Startup Life
I help the team to design new features to our social web products We share the same office space with another startup 2bkco Three things The work process is different from consulting work It is faster and more iterative there s no point coming up with a product that no one uses Client work consists of deadlines and checklists in a startup the team can decide what to design and when Coders are good in SF and they re not nerds It means new things can be tested in a very short period of time and the startups don t usually have a conclave of non tech founders There s a lot more experience of what happens next Cooperation and scaling get much more notice than in Finland It means better engineering and communication right from the start Here are some feel good pics from the city enjoy Pekka Me elsewhere http www pekkahartikainen fi http www twitter com pastorator Alamo Square in Hayes Valley near our office Lower Haight One can lead very different lifestyles here different neighborhoods are closely located to each other Stanford seemed to be a peaceful and study oriented environment You could sense the competition

  • Raimo on Tour: Finalization of the first week | Startup Life
Despite its simplicity I liked the lecture in general I especially valued the final thoughts on revolutionary entrepreneurship presented during the last slide above They wrapped the basic idea behind running a good startup quite well Using the opportunities whenever possible trusting own abilities and courage sharing information with others accepting failure as a part of learning and continuous striving for the success were the main topics in this part

  • Startup Life from Mikito: Setting up in SF | Startup Life
lots of events and work I decided to hire a local guy off a freelancing site to help with my search In SF everything is on Craigslist and browsing through the listings takes quite a while so I arranged to have a Google docs spreadsheet to be updated daily with new ads from CL I d then run around the city to get to open houses after work Interestingly the SF market moves very quickly with a number of desirable apartments going within the same day they were listed e g open house at 6pm rented by 6 20 pm I finally found a place centrally located but small which fit my needs and signed the papers about a day later My tip for prospective searchers would be to look at neighborhoods rather than specific apartments since you ll probably miss a couple of opportunities while trying to figure out where you want to live Oh and do install Padmapper on your phone to find the rentals wherever you are For furniture me and Mikko headed over to the Ikea in Oakland with a Zipcar Thanks to a busy schedule this was on the same day I signed the rental we got there 80 minutes before closing time This led to quite a bit of power shopping I didn t know I could manage to buy a bed desk linen mattress pillows dishes and kitchenware in a little over an hour but I got my stuff and we returned the car just in time at midnight after trying In n Out Burger for late dinner After getting my SSN I applied for a credit card from my bank Basically the only sensible option is to get a secured credit card where you leave a safety deposit equal to your spending
